SUNDAY, MARCH 20TH AT 3 P.M. MATT ULERY PRESENTS AN ALL STAR EDITION OF “LOOM” at LaFontsee Galleries, Grand Rapids.

In December 2015 Vanity Fair Magazine published “These Millennials Are Shaking Up the Jazz World,” a lovely photo essay including Chicago area bassist/bandleader Matt Ulery (33) who’s band Loom appears in the next Underground Concert Series event, Sunday, March 20th, 3 p.m., at LaFontsee Galleries, 833 Lake Drive SE, Grand Rapids, MI.

In collaboration with LaFontsee Galleries and Blue Lake Public Radio’s Lazaro Vega, Adventuremusic.org presents these Sunday afternoons of experiential concerts, The Underground Series, music at the highest level of creativity in the intimate, listener friendly concert environment of LaFontsee Galleries.

Appearing on several “best of” lists for participating in Makaya McCraven’s stunning recording project “In the Moment,” as well as the new Goran Ivanovic Trio recording, Ulery is coming off a great year melding music from the Balkan’s with Spanish or Latin American sounds, fusing jazz and hip hop, or developing a “chamber jazz” concept melding instrumentation from the classical concert world with the concepts and rhythms of creative improvised music.

National Public Radio’s Patrick Jarenwattananon noted, “The Chicago bassist Matt Ulery writes beautiful music in an unpretentious way…It often borrows from Eastern European scales, orchestral tone colors, folks textures…But it doesn’t sound like a calculus class…[Never straying] too far away from pretty melody over undulating rhythms….”

Loom’s instrumentation and personnel is flexible. The edition performing Sunday, March 20th at 3 p.m. includes a who’s who of Chicago’s music community: Rob Clearfield on keyboards; Jon Deitemyer playing drums; the return of trumpeter Russ Johnson, who performed in the Underground Series with the Charlie Kohlhase’s Explorers Club in March of 2015; Geof Bradfield blowing bass clarinet and Matt Ulery offering double bass, tuba and compositions.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $10 for students with a student I.D. and $25 at the door. Kids ages 12 and under are free. Advance tickets available only from www.adventuremusic.org .
