Guitarist Joshua Breakstone opens the sixth season of The Underground Music Series presented by adventuremusic.org at LaFontsee Galleries, Grand Rapids.

Sunday, October 27th at 3 p.m. Celebrate Art Blakey’s Centennial in style with New York guitarist Joshua Breakstone, bassist Marion Hayden and drummer Sean Dobbins in a program of compositions associated with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. The sixth season of The Underground Concert Series presented by Adventuremusic.org and LaFontsee Galleries with corporate support by GR Therapy Group (Experience a Difference) kicks off with a hard bop jazz fan’s delight in the music of drummer/bandleader Art Blakey played by veteran guitarist Joshua Breakstone (www.joshuabreakstone.com). Breakstone’s horn-like single note lines are created with sound energy described as “fire in velvet.” Bassist Marion Hayden and drummer Sean Dobbins are Detroit’s finest jazz rhythm section.

LaFontsee Galleries and www.adventuremusic.org are pleased to unveil their new collaborative season of “The Underground Series,” four matinee concerts held on the last Sundays of October, February, March and April at 3 p.m. in LaFontsee Galleries, 833 Lake Drive SE, Grand Rapids, MI.

October, 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the great jazz drummer Art Blakey. Guitarist Joshua Breakstone is touring throughout the US from September to November in support of the release of his new recording on Capri Records, “Children of Art”, a tribute to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. On the new recording, Joshua plays with drummer Eliot Zigmund (well-known from his years with Bill Evans) and bassist Martin Wind (current member of the trios of Bill Mays, Dena DeRose, Bill Cunliffe, Ann Hampton Callaway, Ted Rosenthal, and Matt Wilson’s Quartet “Arts and Crafts”). We are happy to have him as part of his fall ’19 tour, appearing with bassist Marion Hayden and drummer Sean Dobbins.
